EAR PWR is returning to town in August to promote their album Super Animal Brothers III (carpark). Recently Acquired + video and mp3s

An almost weekly assortment of musical oddities purchased or given to POF.

BAD DUDES - Eat Drugs 12″ (dltd art/killshaman) - 500 pressed on black

BIPOLAR BEAR/Aa (big A LITTLE A) - Books on Tapes remixes 7″ (kill shaman) - 500 pressed translucent blue; comes with silkscreen sleeve.

DARK CASTLE - Flight of Pegasus (self) - Five song debut release from Florida male/female doom metal duo; gatefold sleeve with mini-black and white poster and lyrics on insert.

DARK CASTLE - Spirited Migration (at a loss) New album which includes 2 reworked tracks from Flight of Pegasus.

FUTURE OF THE LEFT - Travels With Myself and Another Lp+d/l (4ad) - Second effort from 2/3rds of defunct Welsh punk band Mclusky. Lyrics on vinyl sleeve.  I dig this more than their first release, Curses.

OCS - 2 (narnack) - John Dwyer disc of early/pre-Thee Oh Sees: “acoustic guitar, noise collage of home recordings (from) 2001-2003″.

RWAKE - If You Walk Before You Crawl, You Crawl Before You Die (at a loss) - 2004 release from this Southern metal sextet.   They have a more current album out on relapse.

YIKES - Whoa Comas/Blood Bomb (kill shaman) - More goodness from the endless San Francisco garage punk catalog of John Dwyer & friends (Pink & Brown, The Hospitals, Coachwhips and Thee Oh Sees/OCS)   Seven song EP with an alternate version of Thee Oh Sees’ song “Carol Ann”.  Yikes is reminisciant of Thee Oh Sees live performances: spastic, fast and intense.

YOUNG WIDOWS/PELICAN - Split 7″ (temporary residency ltd) - Third in a series of 4 split records, which, when combined make one large art skull by David Cook. The fourth will feature Australian repetitious noise-makers, My Disco.

VOLCOM Entertainment Vinyl club - In the past few years, Volcom Entertainment has been squeezing out some quality music other than the power-pop-mall punk that initially established them.  A subscription only series of six 7″ splits, released through out all of last year, built up their roster with up & coming acts such as Birds of Avalon, Monotonix, Red Fang and Tweak Bird and a few established punk acts, like Year Long Disaster, Turbonegro and Valient Thorr. The 2009 roster for the 7″ club has just been announced: ASG, Andrew WK, Valis, Kandi Coded, Battletorn, Double Negative, Sleepy Sun, Harvey Milk, Wildildlife, Bad Dudes and Mammatus.  Here is a video preview of the Valis/Kandi Coded split:

BIRDS OF AVALON - Uncanny Valley (volcom) - Mp3 of “Your Downtime Is Up” courtesy of volcom (duh). This just came out this week, so I have not had a chance to listen to it yet.

TWEAK BIRD - Reservations (volcom) - The first time hearing Tweak Bird, I thought it was Big Business. Big Business slays and so does Tweak Bird. From Volcom “Reservations, is a sweeping seven song introduction to a band exploring the depths of heavy experimental, progressive and psych-infused rock”. Mp3 from Volcom of “Whorses“.

Tallest Man on Earth review

The Tallest Man On Earth, aka, Kristian Matsson, opened for John Vanderslice @ House of Blues in Dallas, Texas on 6/25/09
by Weijia of Death  FYI - Selected video is available HERE from The Weijia of Death

Depending on the personality of the artist, a one-man show can be hard for an audience. Some soloists choose to play for themselves, forgetting that they’re performing live and completely ignoring their crowd. Tallest Man on Earth is no such artist. The Swedish native switched between two acoustic guitars throughout the set, playing them like they were an extension of his arm. Moving agilely back and forth across the stage, he even stuck his instrument in his audience’s faces, plunging them into his world. TMOE’s songs are generally upbeat; their messages speak to the everyman. During one song, a cell phone rang loudly; TMOE raised his head in acknowledgement, his inflection unchanging. With an expression of slight apologetic wonder, he stared in the direction of the disruption, as if asking ‘oh, I beg your pardon, is that for me?’ He then smiled, continuing. He was enjoying the show as much as his listeners. Deftly tuning his arm to his liking during the last song, with a glint in his eyes, TMOE says “this guitar does not want to say goodbye”.

Lemonade Review

Lemonade opened @ Hailey’s in Denton for Telepathe 6/20/09

by Weijia of Death. Selected video from this show is available HERE, courtesy of The Weijia of Death.

If Nintendo commissioned LA noise rockers HEALTH to score their next Mario Kart release, the soundtrack would sound something like Lemonade. Lemonade was formed 3 years ago sounding very much like HEALTH; the music on their latest album is more developed structurally and has considerably more concrete melodies. While one can debate that HEALTH could be danced to, I would argue it be something more along the lines of head-bangings and epileptic fits, whereas Lemonade can be grooved to in more conventional forms of dance. The main driver in their music is definitely the drums, performed by a drummer who has a penchant for changing into shorts right before the show so no beat will be constricted by the skinny pants he was fashioning pre-show. The San Francisco trio jammed through Rainbow Road, taking only a couple of people along for the ride at the beginning of the show, but by then end, the Party Kart became a fully loaded Party Bus, with many limp bodied Dentonites trying hard to NOT act like they are enjoying the show.
