An almost weekly assortment of musical oddities purchased by or given to POF.

The ALIENS - LUNA (birdman) - Formed by three founding members of defunct UK experimental folk-rock-electronic act, The Beta Band. The Aliens are described as “psychedelically inclined rock and acid dipped electronics”. Check out their site and their label, Pet Rock Records.

APHEX TWIN - Unreleased Promo Dec ‘04 (no label!) - A typical mysterious release from electronic music pioneer, Richard D. James. Silver label on vinyl with Aphex Twin sticker on white cardboard sleeve. Hand-numbered out of 500. No other information, except: 4 tracks for a total of 21 minutes.

COACHWHIPS/INTELLIGENCE - Split 7″ (omnibus) - Heavyweight vinyl. Side-A is The Coachwhips “Ringing the Chowbell” and “Brains Out”, side-B is The Intelligence vs. Karate Party.

EAGLE TWIN - The Unkindness of Crows (southern lord) - Brian in Maleveller swears this is good.

FERGUS & GERONIMO - Blind Muslim Girl 7″ (tic tac totally) - The Second 7″ from Dentron vintage pop duo, which features Andrew from Teenage Cool Kids and Jason of Wax Museums. Order direct to receive a ‘gold’ 45 version, although, in person it appears to be yellow. Here is an mp3 from the First single on Woodsist, “Harder Than It’s Ever Been” via cat bird seat.

GIRLS - Lust for Life 7″ (true panther sounds) - I have mentioned this before: True Panther Sounds is a new boutique label from Matador Records; they have music from Hunx & His Punx and Lemonade coming out. This is a re-issued single for Lust for Life, but with a new B-side, “Life in San Francisco”. Mp3 of “Lust for Life” via Matador.

JACUZZI BOYS/WOVEN BONES - Split 7′ (needless) - The first release by Needless Records features Austin band Woven Bones (guitar/organ/drums/vocals) and Florida’s Jacuzzi Boys.

JAPANDROIDS - Post-Nothing 12″ (unfamiliar) - Courtesy of Unfamiliar Records, out of Canada, is a rare red vinyl edition of the Japandroids debut full-length Post-Nothing.  Sign up for the mailing list to try your chance at winning this in an upcoming newsletter. Email paradeof@paradeofflesh.com

The PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART - Higher Than The Stars (slumberland) - 5 song ep on CD, but only 4 if you get the vinyl. Features remix by Saint Etienne.

TY SEGALL/MIKAL CRONIN - Pop Songs ep 7″ (goodbye boozy) - Italian garage/punk label issues Ty Segall’s third split record this year; the first was a Telephone Explosion 12″ with BLACK TIME and then a Woodsist 7″ with Thee Oh Sees. Limited to a pressing of 300.

KURT VILE - He’s Alright 7″ (matador) - “Philly’s constant hitmaker’s” debut single for Matador Records. Features 3 tracks on light blue vinyl. Free with pre-order of Childish Prodigy from Matador.

WATER FALLS - Sleep Experts (self) - CDr from Dallas experimental outfit, featuring members of The Theater Fire and Eyes, Wings and Many Other Things. Seven somber songs supply an atmospheric background for an East Asian trance in a span of 45 minutes. I wish the songs had bled together, otherwise this is worth checking out. Will be released on colored vinyl by Mis Ojos Discos in February.

The EP tracks are harsher and dirtier than the polished recording of Post-Nothing (poly-vinyl) which will hopefully not deter anyone from enjoying the edgier side of Japandroids. All Lies has a cover of the McLusky anthem “To Hell With Good Intentions”. Standout songs on the EPs, include “Press Corps”, “Sexual Aerosol” and the Six and a half minute “Lucifer’s Symphony”. Playing at The Cavern on October 13th with The Coathangers.

An almost weekly assortment of musical oddities purchased by or given to POF.

BAD VEINS - Gold and Warm 7″ (black iris) - The song title sounds like this track would be about urine, but it’s not. Die-cut sleeve. Mp3 of “Gold and Warm” from Black Iris Collective.

BEASTIE BOYS - Doublecheck Your Head (self) - Max Tannone, who recently released Jaydiohead has his newest project available for download or stream here. Although I am anti-mash ups, I did find this interesting, since it was Beastie Boys being melded with their own instrumentations.

DESTROYER - Bay of Pigs EP 12″ (merge) - Two-song, vinyl only EP. 1,000 pressed. Comes with d/l. “Bay of Pigs” clocks in at 13 and a half minutes and “Ravers” on the B-Side is about 8 minutes in length.

MARIACHI EL BRONX - S/T (swami) - Los Angeles punk act The Bronx, release a purely Tejano album with English lyrics, under the name “Mariachi El Bronx”. Review/videos: Yourself and the Air (at Rubber Gloves)

by Weijia of Death

Sounds Like: Modest Mouse, Ugly Cassanova, Parts and Labor
Highlights: Sick Day, Bicycle Plus

Yourself and the Air may be young, but boy do they have a big sound. YATA’s guitar arrangements make seemingly tangible ripples throughout their songs, like a sonar beam blasting through the stretches of spacy beats and sparkles of tinkling vibraphone. Given such grand sounding music, YATA’s songs have much mundane subjects such as skipping school or fucking around with bicycles. It’s too easy to read deeper meaning behind their lyrics because their sound is so dynamic; and at first, it may be disappointing to realize that the lyrics are mostly to be taken at face value, however, on second thought, perhaps we don’t need a galactic war to make us feel like we are floating through space. Perhaps people’s feelings are as desensitized about songs as they are about violence in film. Perhaps a simple bicycle race in itself is an excellent adventure.

YATA has an LP and EP out and is working on a second full length album; some of their new songs are on Daytrotter Sessions and are available for download at daytrotter.com

Videos for Sick Day and Bicycle Plus.

Saviours’ Seven Inches

I was going to list this in the Recently Acquired section, but I thought this deserved a separate entry.

Oakland, CA’s black metal act, SAVIOURS, released three seven inches simultaneously for their current tour which ends this week. Each vinyl is a different color and comes with a little bonus as well. The first is Acid Hand/Slave to the Hex on translucent white vinyl with a large Saviours’ sticker. The second is Burnin’ Cross/Fire in the Sky (Saxon cover) on translucent black vinyl and comes with a Saviours’ patch. The final of the three is  F.G.T./Running Wild (Judas Priest cover) on dirty grey vinyl with poster. Vinyl limited to 500 copies each. All three sleeves form one epic drawing by Tim Lehi. Saviours next full length is due in October. All three seven inches are available from the band, select indie shops or through Kemado Records.
