Quick’s Big Thing

QUICK is hosting their 2nd annual “QUICK’S BIG THING” on June 5th. To my surprise, I am a panelist; but not to my surprise, I am not thrilled with the rest of the panel. Nothing personally against anyone, I just feel my choices will be overshadowed by the masses. There are probably, at most, 2 people whom I would agree with; I guess that’s what makes award shows interesting.

This year’s event will be held at the Granada Theatre and features a lot of hip-hop, maybe too much. Out of 4 acts, including the DJ, three are hip-hop.  I wasn’t aware that Dallas was known for hip-hop.  If you look at the nominees, there is not much hip-hop, so it doesn’t really equate.

At least it’s only $5 and it goes to charity.  Click on the link above to check out the nominees and vote in the coming days.

UPDATE: People need to start preparing for this show by watching DMX TV on Tuesdays at 10pm on Channel 29. You know it baby!

An almost weekly assortment of musical oddities purchased or given to POF.

CROCODILESNeon Jesus 7” (zoo music) – and the award for “most danceable blasphemous song of the year” goes to . . .
CROCODILESSummer of Hate 12” (fat possum) The existing hype surrounding Crocodiles, besides sounding like Jesus & Mary Chain, is this San Diego duo has Charles Rowell from SOME GIRLS and Brandon Welchez from the defunct The Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower; both were crucial in establishing San Diego’s art punk movement from early to mid 2000s. Everything about Crocodiles debut album, Summer of Hate, feels familiar but still sounds novel; morbid and secular themes, yet upbeat and consistently appealing, especially with lyrics “sing along with me, I want to kill tonight”. Anticipate to be inundated with remixes later this year. After Crocodiles finish their current run with The Faint & Ladytron, they will immediately jump on tour with HOLY FUCK in May and June; making a Dallas stop at the Lounge on Elm st on June 10th. MP3s “I Wanna Kill” and “Summer of Hate“.

EAR PWRSuper Animal Brothers III (carpark) Baltimore (by way of North Carolina), electro-disco duo create on Super Animal Brother III a “nuclear party grenade that will blow your mind”. Combining elements of Italian disco and influences by Wham City (Dan Deacon, Future Islands) and customized synthesizers make EAR PWR standout among all imitators. Think of a D.I.Y. version of Yacht. Super Animal Brothers III is an intense 30 minutes of quirky, hyper-anthemic dirty-dance music. Touring this summer with Carpark Records label mate, Adventure, playing at The Handsome Kitten on June 20th. MP3 of “Future Eyes“.

MAN MANThe Man in the Blue Turban with a Face (ace fu)
MAN MANSix Demon Bag 10” (free news projects) – double picture disc housed in gatefold sleeve. This version is a limited edition vinyl picture disc of an early career-defining album for Man Man. I have had for quite a long time, but it looked so pretty in this format.

Poster of the week

Sam & James Heimer’s MAN MAN poster got Poster of the Week for tomorrow’s show at Lounge on Elm St with Boom Boom Box and Giggle Party.

Crocodiles to open for Holy Fuck (+ video)

CROCODILES are the main support for Holy Fuck’s entire US tour that begins in May. Crocodiles are a San Diego two-piece Jesus & Mary Chain/Primal Scream rip-off, (that’s a good thing), which features members of The Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower and Some Girls.

I tried to go see them at Granada earlier this evening, but my 8PM arrival was too late to catch their set.

Little Joy is coming back

Dear people,

Brazilian indie rock group LITTLE JOY is coming back through Dallas, this time at Club Dada on June 9th. Tickets will go on sale April 25th. The last time through, November, was a packed house at the Lounge. Tour support will be announced whenever the band decides. The below video was filmed by me at the last Dallas show.

June 13th no mas

Since Gods & Queens cancelled, so has MEDUSA (their tour support); therefore no show on June 13th.
