Recently Acquired

An almost weekly assortment of musical oddities purchased or given to POF.

BLACK DICE - Chocolate Cherry 7″ (catsup plate) - Limited to 500 copies; initially being sold on tour.

CHARLIE & The MOONHEARTS - Drop In Drop Out 7″ (tic tac totally) - Recorded by Ty Segall

CHARLIE & The MOONHEARTS - Thunderbeast cdr (bubca) - Limited to 100 copies. Same tracks that are on their Telephone Explosion Records cassette. Features a cover of Del Shannon’s “Runaway”.

CHARLIE & The MOONHEARTS/TEEN ANGER - Split 12″ (telephone explosion)

GOLDEN TRIANGLE - 6 Song Tour Ep 12″ (sangre libre) - Silkscreen cover designed by Raul De Nieves. Hand numbered out of 500.

HEADDRESS - Lunes 12″ + mp3 (no quarter) Mysterious and elusive, Austin psychedelic duo, with a prior release last year on Mexican Summer (an off-shoot of kemado).

HOLY FUCK - Lovely Allen 7″ (young turks) - B-side features a studio version of “Super Inuit”

HOLY FUCK - S/T LP (young turks) - 2007 debut, surprisingly nothing new out since this release.

JANE - (self) - cdr in a 7″ sleeve.

A PLACE TO BURY STRANGERS - Missing You Ep (rocket girl) - Four track EP with one track, a demo and two remixes. Cardboard sleeve.

The POLYCORNS - S/T cdr (self) - Dallas duo’s 12 song debut that is completely influenced by Cold War Kids. Fairly predictable song structure and the soulful singing is a little contrived but people that frequent places like Barley House or Poor David’s Pub would be all over this.

The PRESENT - World I See 2 x 12″ (loaf) -  Debut full-length from 2008; featuring members of Gang Gang Dance.  You really need to be in a special mood to listen to this.

QUEENS - ? (self) - cdr in a 7″ sleeve.

TROUBLE ANDREW - Remixed + Remastered (virgin) - Could probably tour with an ipod and a microphone.

TY SEGALL- Universal Momma 7″ (true panther sounds) - Hand-numbered out of 500

TY SEGALL - Horn the Unicorn 12″ (hbsp-2x) - Compilation of out-of-print cassettes, a 7″ and some early gems; limited to a run of 500.

YAM - Assumptions (blug fug) - Yam is an acronym for You & Me. Assumptions is entirely too long of an album, clocking in at 65 minutes. Overall it is really hokey and definitely not for me; with lyrics like “shazam” thrown-in at random (or songs titled “Make Time for Hugging” and “The Man Who Invented Syphilis”, its hard to take this album/band seriously. Features one member of Deep Snapper. Assumptions was recorded at Echolab.

Bootlegs - It’s been a while since I taped audio (and video) for any of my shows, but I want to say thanks to Chris Magee for recording some of my last few shows and I hope he continues to do so becauses its one less thing I have to think about during a show.

Interesting song/video

Elizabeth & The Catapult is new to me, but I dug this track, so…

Elizabeth & The Catapult :: TALLER CHILDREN

Abe Vigoda Silkscreen

Printed and designed by James Heimer for their upcoming Dallas show at the Cavern on July 8th with Talbot Tagora, Sydney Confirm and Cosmic Cocks (to DJ).

New Giggle Party video

This video was directed/designed by UK artists, DAMIEN WEIGHILL and Stephen Wake. GIGGLE PARTY are playing at Annex House on Friday and they have a couple shows scheduled through me coming up this Fall. They are also nominated for a Dallas Observer Music Award this year, so go vote… and vote for me too while you’re at it.

Show Review: The Antlers at Mohawk

by Weijia of Death

The Antlers opened for Au Revoire Simone on 6/6/09 at Mohawk (Austin, Texas). Hopsice, the Brooklyn-based band’s debut LP, extols the body’s physical and mental afflictions, reverentially suggesting that it is through these human conditions that one feels alive. Lyrically, The Antlers concentrates on stories of illnesses of the body and the mind, but shimmering musical accompaniment offsets the gloom; the overall effect is both sad and uplifting. Performing live, The Antlers have a surprisingly dynamic sound for their relatively small band; the singer’s voice recalls a restrained Win Butler (of Arcade Fire), and the swelling percussion and wailing guitar effects contribute to a grand atmosphere that seems impossible for just three musicians to attain. Highlights from the show include the opener “Bear” and “Two.”

Next two shows: Thursday and Saturday

This will be my third time hosting TY SEGALL. Once he came through with Thee Oh Sees and the second time was a last-minute fill-in b/c of Wavves canceling their Dallas appearance in March. Ty has recently joined SiC ALps.  He will be performing as a trio for this tour.

Two New Videos of Thee Oh Sees

I filmed these back in March at sxsflesh

Next Show: June 18th

The next show will be Thursday, June 18th at Club Dada. 1960s garage-influenced, solo, psyche revivalist, TY SEGALL , will be touring as a trio. I might have them play on the main stage at Dada, instead of the Listening Room as originally planned.  Ty Segall’s next album, Lemons (goner) will be out in mid-July; if the records are delivered in time to my crib, then they will have some at the Dada show.  (Ty left for tour today and had the first batch of records shipped to me).  He is on a joint tour with CHARLIE & the MOONHEARTS.

This show is a must for fans of Thee Oh Sees, Sic Alps, The Strange Boys and Wavves.
