The HOTRATS + mp3

The HOTRATS - Turn On (G & D/fat possum) - Gaz & Dan, half of late-90s UK alternative act Supergrass release 12 covers of bands ranging from Beastie Boys & Sex Pistols to Gang of Four & Roxy Music. Turn On is obviously what ‘turns these guys on’ or at least influenced them. Honestly, I haven’t really been interested in any Supergrass album since 1999’s Supergrass (parlophone) but this could garner fans they’ve lost over the years. If you were ever a fan, then you know their first two albums were brilliant and never got stale. Turn on is a great party album and conversation starter. Here is an mp3 of their rendition of the Beatles “Drive My Car“, which is not on the my version of the CD I have; and neither is “West End Girls” by Pet Shop Boys, so if anyone has it, please let me know because I’d love to hear it.

Rock Me Like A _________

by Nick Rallo

In an interview from last year, Trey Pool, guitarist of THE GARY, told Madeloud that they would be doing a record around the theme of hurricanes and hailstorms. The album turned out to be exactly that: the sound of a hurricane. Logan, which was digitally released in 2009 and set to be physically released next month, has enough thrashing guitars to blow your curtains off the pole.

I like tracks like “Ancient Music” and “Don’t Send Me There” that sound rough and powerful, as though they sweated the making of it. It helps that each song has the running metaphor of a hurricane; it’s damn fun. The bass is fiery and the guitar has that ragged, fevered sound that you can hear in good garage bands from Texas. There’s no ease in the album. The story is gruff and literally swells like a thunderstorm. The opening verse from the 7th track, “Hurricane Radio” slows the rock down:

“Hurricane radio 1,2,3 / I detect my memory trying to out run me …is this a vague broadcast / do you read me?”

I agree with Austin Sound’s analysis (here) that these guys are more than a one-noter, and their passion for a good concept album shows it. If you live in Austin, check out their CD release party for Logan on February 6th at Scoot Inn.

Review: The Fiery Furnaces @ The Lounge

by Nick Rallo

The Lounge on Elm Street is shaped a little bit like the number eight. A big round room for the bar that leads to a narrow hallway with arty photographs that leads to a oval shaped stage area. The ceiling is high so the sound can be rich and full. The crowd was full enough that people were spilling out into the narrow hallway, and most were dancing at the citrusy, steamy rock The Fiery Furnaces was putting out. A man next to me was wearing one of those box-shaped winter hats with the ear flaps, the kind a person wears on a Russian Steppe. One guy next to me was so into the music he was sweating through his shirt, which was one bad pill away from being tossed on the stage in celebration.

Sounds like everyone was having a good time, right? I was. I had some beer and was into the swagger of singer Eleanor Friedberger; the sick guitar from Matthew Friedberger; the crispness of the backing band was all good. Live, their songs are less experimental than the records–more steady, driving rock. With Eleanor’s fluffed hair and high jeans, I imagined her more like Grace Slick on stage than a “quirky” indie star.

So, I was a little bit pissed when, 3 songs before the encore, Eleanor Friedberger said unhappily, “Hi Dallas, when we come back, tell your promoter to find a better place than this.” There was an awkward silence, and everyone looked at each other, confused. What do you say when someone leans over and says, “this place sure does suck, huh?” It makes the person feel like an idiot for being there, which is a jerk thing to do at a paid concert. Most of your fans, if they’re real fans, would watch you play at a dog pound. That’s the point and fun of a dive bar concert. We’re all there for a reason, and you’re doing good enough to fill the place–so why make us feel like “we didn’t quite live up to the music” in the process?

The Fiery Furnaces new album, Take Me Round Again, is out now and they’re about to head to Europe. Catch them live if you can, but make sure the venue’s adequate for your needs first.

FUCKED UPCouple Tracks (matador) – Two disc/lp set compiles all their hard-to-find b-sides and covers from 7”s, 12”s and cassettes since their inception. Longtime fans will be thrilled that they don’t have to dig up their vinyl to hear these tracks, some of which are stronger than their A-Sides. The album cover is almost identical to their first collection, 2003’s Epic In Minutes (deranged); they took a band photo then (for epic) and now for Couple Tracks. Look at the covers side-by-side to see how the band aged.
